Industrial adhesive users – do you know how to read your SDS?

At last, here is your all-inclusive guide to reading your SDS, or Safety Data Sheet! If you’re looking for a more general guide of adhesive terms, check out our adhesive terms glossary!

For quick reference, basic product information can be found in section 1. More detailed product and chemical data can be found in section 3, as well as sections 9 through 12. Product usage information can be found in sections 4 through 8, as well as section 13. Any hazard or regulatory information can be found in sections 2, 15 and 16. Transport information is found in section 14. Below is a detailed overview of each section, covering the whole of the SDS.

Reading your SDS
  1. Section 1 – Identification
    • This is where you’ll find the product name, recommended application of the product, supplier details, and the emergency number.
  2. Section 2 – Hazard(s) Information
    • This is where the hazard information is, if the product is hazardous. Physical, health and environmental hazards are listed here, as well as the signal word and H statements, and ingredient names. If there is no information listed in this section, or if the hazards are listed as “not classified”, then the product is not considered hazardous.
  3. Section 3 – Composition/Information on Ingredients
    • This section lists out the product ingredients, CAS numbers and quantities, as well as the classification of each ingredient.
  4. Section 4 – First-Aid Measures
    • Refer to this section for a description of first aid measures to take with this product, as well as any symptoms that may occur.
  5. Section 5 – Fire-Fighting Measures
    • This section recommends advice in case of fire.
  6. Section 6 – Accidental Release Measures
    • In case of product release or a spill, this section will tell you what action to take.
  7. Section 7 – Handling and Storage
    • Recommendations for correct product handling and storage are listed here.
  8. Section 8 – Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
    • This section will list any ingredient exposure levels, as well as any exposure/personal protection controls that are recommended.
  9. Section 9 – Physical and Chemical Properties
    • Arguably the most important section of the SDS, this is where you’ll find the products physical and chemical properties listed out. Information such as appearance, color, odor, VOCs, boiling point, solubility, flammability and density can be found here.
  10. Section 10 – Stability and Reactivity
    • Here is where you’ll see the stability of the product, hazardous decomposition products created, and materials and conditions to avoid when using the product.
  11. Section 11 – Toxicological Information
    • In this section, you’ll find information on toxicological effects such as acute toxicity, specific target organ toxicity and carcinogenicity in the product itself, as well as in the ingredients.
  12. Section 12 – Ecological Information
    • This section will list out any ecological information on the product.
  13. Section 13 – Disposal Considerations
    • This section lists out appropriate disposal methods for the product.
  14. Section 14 – Transport Information
    • Another important section, this is where you will find product transport information such as UN and other shipping names, transport classes and labels, and packing groups.
  15. Section 15 – Regulatory Information
    • In this section, you will find a list of any federal or other regulations associated with the product.
  16. Section 16 – Other Information
    • In the last section of your SDS, you will find other information that isn’t listed elsewhere in the SDS, including hazard statements in full (if applicable) and HMIS ratings.
